Gretchen "Pink Ruffles"
Acrylic on Canvas 24" x 24"
In my most current paintings, I explore the whimsicality of femininity in a series of fashion sketches and spontaneous gestures of girls and women. The challenging era of the 1930s and 40s , when ‘some of it was fun’ is of particular interest to me.
The mystical strength and energy of femaleness is represented by poking fun at the textures and trappings of ‘girly fashion’. In some of these paintings, I use the medium of acrylic and apply fabric swatches of tulle, lace, and other trimmings to bring an element of three dimensional structure and real life to the surface of the painting. In others, the lusciously rich quality of oil paint makes the physical act of painting a delight in itself and stirs pleasure in the representation of the experience of women.
